বর্তমান সাহিত্যকে জানার জন্য, সাহিত্যের সমৃদ্ধির জন্য অতীত সাহিত্যের আলোচনা-সমালোচনা প্রয়োজন। এ প্রসঙ্গে কবি ও সমালোচক টি এস ইলিয়ট বলছেন, ‘প্রতি শতাব্দীতে অথবা এরকম কোনো সময়ে এটি আকাক্সিক্ষত হয়ে ওঠে যে, কিছু সমালোচকের আবির্ভাব ঘটবে, যারা সাহিত্যের অতীত নিয়ে সমালোচনা করবেন।’ এ প্রসঙ্গে আমরা রবীন্দ্রনাথের ‘গীতাঞ্জলি’র কথা বলতে পারি। এ মহৎ সাহিত্য কর্মটি গড়ে ওঠার পেছনে রবীন্দ্রনাথের ব্যক্তিজীবনের রক্তক্ষরণ আছে। আর তা জানার জন্য আমাদের কবিজীবনের পেছনের ইতিহাস জানতে হবে।

ঋষি কবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ বিচারপ্রার্থী হয়েছেন স্রষ্টার কাছে। ইংরেজ শাসকদের উগ্র দমননীতি চলছে তখন। মেদিনীপুরের হিজলী জেলে ঘটেছে মর্মান্তিক ঘটনা। বহু বাঙালি যুবক বিনা বিচারে জেলে অথবা দুর্গম কোনো স্থানে বন্দি। জেল কর্তৃপক্ষের সঙ্গে বিরোধের কারণে দুজনকে গুলি করে মেরেছে ইংরেজ। আরো ২০ জনের ওপর করেছে অমানুষিক নির্যাতন। এই মর্মান্তিক খবরে গড়ের মাঠে কলকাতা মনুমেন্টের নিচে সভা ডাকেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ। লাখো জনতার সমাবেশে সভাপতির ভাষণে তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানান। তিনি স্রষ্টার উদ্দেশে লেখেন ‘প্রশ্ন’ কবিতা।বিরুদ্ধ রাজনীতি কবিকে এভাবেই স্রষ্টার কাছাকাছি নিয়ে এসেছিল। পাশাপাশি ছিল প্রকৃতির সান্নিধ্য এবং প্রিয়জনের অকালমৃত্যু। এর সবকিছু রবীন্দ্রনাথকে গীতাঞ্জলির মতো অমর কাব্য লিখিয়েছিল।অশান্ত রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতি স্রষ্টার কাছে বিচারপ্রার্থী করেছে রবীন্দ্রনাথকে। ব্রিটিশ শাসনকে কোন্ চোখে দেখতেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ, তা নিয়ে বিতর্ক আছে। জালিওয়ানওয়ালাবাগের হত্যাকা-ের প্রতিবাদ করে ব্রিটিশদের দেওয়া সম্মানসূচক ‘নাইট’ উপাধি তিনি ত্যাগ করেছেন। আবার তাদের সভ্যতাকে সাদরে গ্রহণ করেছেন। পশ্চিম থেকে জ্ঞান-বিজ্ঞান তথা সভ্যতাকে নির্দ্বিধায় গ্রহণ করতে বলেছেন, ‘পশ্চিম আজি খুলিয়াছে দ্বার’। ইংরেজের নিষ্ঠুরতাকে ঘৃণা করলেও তার প্রকাশটা ছিল নমনীয়।

মা ব্যস্ত তার সংসার নিয়ে আর বাবা ব্রাহ্ম দেবেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর সংসার বিবাগি ও উদাসীন। কাজেই রবিকে দেখার দায়িত্ব স্বাভাবিকভাবেই বাড়ির আয়া চাকরদের ওপর। বড়লোকের ছেলে হলে কী হবে, চাকর-বাকরদের মহলেও রবির কোনো আদর ছিল না। ঠাকুরবাড়ির ভালো ভালো খাবার রবিকে দেওয়ার নাম করে তারাই খেয়ে ফেলত। বালক রবির পোশাকের ব্যাপারেও কারো কোনো নজর ছিল না। দাদারা দামি দামি পোশাক পরলেও পরিবারের কনিষ্ঠ সন্তানটির জন্য বরাদ্দ হতো খুব সাধারণ পোশাক। ঠাকুরদা প্রিন্স দ্বারকানাথের নাতি রবির জীবন ছিল অতি সাধারণ ঘরের ছেলের মতো। সে সময়, সেই নিঃসঙ্গ জীবনে তার সঙ্গী ছিল চারপাশের প্রকৃতি। পরিণত বয়সে সেই দুঃসময়ের কথা স্মৃতিচারণ করেছেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ, ‘পৃথিবীর সমস্ত রূপ রস গন্ধ, সমস্ত নড়াচড়া আন্দোলন, বাড়ির ভেতরের বাগানের নারিকেলগাছ পুকুর ধারের বট, জলের ওপরের ছায়ালোক, রাস্তার শব্দ, চিলের ডাক, ভোরের বেলায় বাগানের গন্ধ, ঝড়-বাদলা সমস্ত জড়িয়ে একটা বৃহৎ অর্ধপরিচিত প্রাণী নানা মূর্তিতে আমায় সঙ্গদান করত।’

প্রকৃতি এভাবেই প্রতিদিন তার সঙ্গী হয়ে উঠেছিল। সংসার বন্ধনের বাইরের একটা জগৎ তার মধ্যে সৃষ্টি করেছিল বিশালতার অনুভূতি। প্রকৃতিকে আরো একবার কাছে থেকে দেখার সুযোগ পেয়েছিলেন বালক রবি। বাবার সঙ্গে হিমালয়ে যাওয়ার আগে বেশ কিছুদিন তারা বোলপুরে থাকলেন। পরবর্তী জীবনে এই বোলপুরেই রবীন্দ্রনাথ গড়ে তুলেছিলেন বিশ্বভারতী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। মহর্ষি দেবেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর কিনেছিলেন বোলপুর, যার নাম পরে রাখা হয়েছিল শান্তিনিকেতন। বোলপুরের নিবিড় প্রকৃতি কাছে টেনেছিল বালক রবিকে।

বাবার সঙ্গে তিনি ঘুরে ঘুরে দেখতেন আম, কাঁঠাল, শাল আর দেবদারু বন। ডালহৌসি পাহাড়ের বক্রোটা নামে পাহাড় চূড়ায় উঠে অবাক বিস্ময়ে দেখলেন, দূরে কি সুন্দর বরফ জমে আছে পাহাড়ের গায়ে। চারদিকে পাইন বন, গভীর খাদ; সরু পথ। রবীন্দ্রনাথ এভাবেই পাঠ নিয়েছেন প্রকৃতি থেকে। পাশাপাশি বাবা নিয়মিত পড়াচ্ছেন সংস্কৃত, ইংরেজি, জ্যোতিষশাস্ত্র। বাবা দেবেন্দ্রনাথ একদিকে ইংরেজি বই থেকে জ্যোতিষ্ক রহস্য বোঝাচ্ছেন, আরেকদিকে খোলা আকাশের নিচে দাঁড়িয়ে চেনাচ্ছেন নক্ষত্র। ছেলেবেলার এ নক্ষত্ররাই যেন পরিণত বয়সে রবিঠাকুরকে দিয়ে লিখিয়েছিল ‘আজি যত তারা তব আকাশে/সবে মোর প্রাণ ভরি প্রকাশে।’

আমরা দেখি, একজন অসহায় রবীন্দ্রনাথ সান্ত্বনা পেতে আশ্রয় খুঁজেছেন স্রষ্টার কাছে। মৃত্যুর কাছে তিনি পরাজিত হয়েছেন বারবার। বড় অসময়ে চলে গেলেন স্ত্রী ভবতারিণী, রবীন্দ্রনাথ যাকে নাম দিয়েছিলেন মৃণালিনী। মাত্র ৪১ বছর বয়সে স্ত্রীকে হারান। বুকের এ গভীর ক্ষত শুকানোর আগেই পরের বছরই ১৯০৩ সালে মারা যায় কন্যা রেণুকা। পুত্র শমীন্দ্রনাথ মারা যায় এর চার বছর পরেই। অতি স্নেহের আরেক কন্যা মাধুরীলতা, সেও চলে গেল ১৯১৮ সালে। ছোট পুত্র রথীন্দ্রনাথের পালিত কন্যা নন্দিনীকে খুব স্নেহ করতেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ। আদর করে ‘পুপু’ বলে ডাকতেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ। বর্ষীয়ান কবির নিঃসঙ্গ জীবনের স্নেহের এ সঙ্গীটিও চলে গেল। চলে গেল কন্যা মীরার সন্তান নীতিন্দ্রনাথ।

চোখের সামনে এতগুলো মৃত্যু সহ্য করতে পারছিলেন না রবীন্দ্রনাথ। পেছন পানে তাকিয়ে দেখেন কেবল শূন্যতা। এ শূন্যতা কবিকে গীতাঞ্জলির দিকে নিয়ে গেছে ক্রমশ। খুব ক্লান্ত হয়ে স্রষ্টার কাছে ক্ষমা চেয়েছেন কবি ‘ক্লান্তি আমার ক্ষমা করো প্রভু/পথে যদি পিছিয়ে পড়ি কভু।’

ছেলেবেলায় প্রকৃতি ছিল তার চারপাশে। সমস্ত প্রকৃতি জড়িয়ে যে বৃহৎ অর্ধপরিচিত প্রাণীটি নানা মূর্তিতে তাকে সঙ্গ দিত, সেই যেন পরিণত বয়সে স্রষ্টার উপলব্ধিতে সহায়তা করেছিল। নশ^র জীবনের কথা বলতে গিয়ে সেই প্রকৃতিকে অনুষঙ্গ করেছেন কবি ‘গগনে গরজে মেঘ ঘন বরষা/কুলে একা বসে আছি নাহি ভরসা।’

জীবন-সন্ধ্যায় স্রষ্টাকে উপলব্ধি করতে চেয়েছেন নিজের মাঝে ‘তোমার সন্ধ্যা প্রদীপ আলোকে/তুমি আর আমি একা।/নয়নে আমার অশ্রুজলের/চিহ্ন কি যায় দেখা?

লালনের দর্শন গভীরভাবে প্রভাবিত করেছে রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ‘আপনারে চিনতে পারলে যাবে অচেনারে চেনা।’

বাবা দেবেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের সুফিভাব-প্রীতি রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ফারসি কবি হাফিজের প্রতি আকৃষ্ট করেছিল। স্রষ্টাকে নিজের মাঝে উপলব্ধি করেছেন কবি ‘সীমার মাঝে অসীম তুমি/বাজাও আপন সুর/আমার মধ্যে তোমার প্রকাশ/তাই এত মধুর।’

রবীন্দ্র বলয়ের চারপাশে ঘুরছিলেন সেই সময়ের বিখ্যাত সব কবি। একসময় যতীন সেনগুপ্ত দুঃখবাদে ডুবলেন, বুদ্ধ দেব, অচিন্ত্যকুমারের সঙ্গী হলেন ডি এইচ লরেন্স ন্যুট হামসুন, র‌্যাবো লোর্কা। মজলেন তাদের রক্ত মাংসে, প্রেমে-অপ্রেমে। মধ্যবর্তী আরেকটি দেয়াল ইলিয়টিক নস্টালজিয়া। সেই আদি অকৃত্রিম নৈরাশ্যবাদ। এ সময়েই ঋষি কবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ বিচিত্র লেখা থেকে নিজেকে গুটিয়ে নিলেন। একটি কেন্দ্রে বা একটি বৃত্তে যেন নিজেকে আবদ্ধ করলেন কবি। আর সেই কেন্দ্র বা বৃত্তটিই হলো স্রষ্টার কাছে নিজেকে সমর্পণ ‘আমি এই লভিনু সঙ্গ তব/সুন্দর হে সুন্দর।’ কিন্তু সেই সুন্দরকে চিনতে না পারায় অনুতপ্ত হয়েছেন ‘আমার হিয়ার মাঝে লুকিয়েছিলে/দেখতে আমি পাইনি/বাহির পানে চোখ মেলেছি/ভেতর পানে চাইনি।’

স্রষ্টা থেকে সৃষ্টির বিচ্ছিন্ন হওয়াকে জালালুদ্দীন রুমি বলেছেন, বাঁশ থেকে বাঁশি বিচ্ছিন্ন হওয়া। বাঁশি কাঁদে মূল থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে যাওয়ার দুঃখে। স্রষ্টার উপলব্ধির চিন্তা থেকে মহাকবি ইকবাল লিখেছেন ‘শিকওয়া, জওয়াব-ই শিকওয়া। টলস্টয়, ডস্তয়েভস্কি, চেখভ, তুর্গেনিভ, রোঁমা রোঁলা, হুইটম্যান প্রমুখ কবি নাস্তিক ছিলেন এমন প্রমাণ আমরা দেখি না। ব্রাহ্ম রবীন্দ্রনাথও তার নিজের জীবনে স্রষ্টার আনন্দকে পেতে চেয়েছেন ‘এই মোর সাধ যেন এ জীবন মাঝে/তব আনন্দ মহা সংগীত বাজে।’

স্রষ্টার প্রতি শ্রদ্ধায়-ভালোবাসায় দাহ হতে চেয়েছেন ‘এই করেছ ভালো, নিঠুর হে/এই করেছ ভালো/এমনি করে হৃদয়ে মোর তীব্র দহন জ্বালো।’

বাবা দেবেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের হাফিজ-প্রীতি রবীন্দ্রনাথকে প্রভাবিত করেছিল দারুণভাবে। আমরা দেখি তার প্রায় সব লেখাতেই প্রত্যক্ষ কিংবা পরোক্ষভাবে জড়িয়েছিল সুফিবাদ ‘বিশ^ সাথে যোগে যেথায় বিহারো/সেইখানে যোগ তোমার সাথে আমারো।’

জীবন-সন্ধ্যায় পৃথিবীর পথ যখন ফুরিয়ে এসেছে, কবি নিশ্চিন্তে বেরিয়ে এসেছেন অভিসারে ‘একলা আমি বাহির হলেম তোমার অভিসারে।’

আর এ অভিসারেই পাশ্চাত্য জগতে পরিচিত ঋষি কবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ তার সমস্ত গীতের অঞ্জলি দিলেন স্রষ্টাকে ‘গীতাঞ্জলি’।

গীতাঞ্জলি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের রচিত শ্লোকগুলির একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য বই (১৮৬১-১৪৪১), যা তাকে নোবেল পেয়েছিল। এটি মূলত ১৯০৮-১৯৯৯-এ বাংলায় রচিত এবং পরবর্তীকালে গদ্যের এর ইংরেজি সংস্করণ ‘দ্য গানের অফারিং’ শিরোনামে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল। লন্ডনের ইন্ডিয়া সোসাইটি ১৯১২ এর শেষদিকে এটি রবীন্দ্রনাথের প্রথম ইংরেজি নৃবিজ্ঞান ছিল। পরের বছরের ১০ নভেম্বর (১৯১৩) রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরকে গীতাঞ্জলি গ্রন্থের জন্য সাহিত্যের নোবেল পুরষ্কার দেওয়া হয়। এই স্বীকৃতি বিশ্বব্যাপী রবীন্দ্রনাথকে অনন্য কাব্য প্রতিভার প্রকাশক হিসাবে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়। বিখ্যাত আইরিশ কবি ডব্লু বি ইয়েটস গীতাঞ্জলির ইংরেজি সংস্করণটির সূচনা লিখেছিলেন। এছাড়াও রথেনস্টেইনের আঁকা কবির একটি পেন্সিল স্কেচ বইটিতে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল। রবীন্দ্রনাথ গীতঞ্জলিকে ডব্লিউবি ইয়েটসে উত্সর্গ করেছিলেন।

১৯১২ এর শেষের দিকে, রবীন্দ্রনাথ জাহাজে লন্ডনে যাওয়ার কথা ছিল। তবে সমুদ্রযাত্রার প্রাক্কালে তিনি পাইলসের আক্রমণে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়েন। পদ্মা নদীর তীরে নৌকায় করে বিশ্রাম নেওয়ার জন্য তিনি কলকাতা ছেড়েছিলেন। সেখানে বিশ্রাম নেওয়ার সময় তাঁর মনে গীতাঞ্জলিকে ইংরেজী অনুবাদ করার ধারণা আসে। রবীন্দ্রনাথ তখন তাঁর ইংরেজি কবিতাটি বিশ্বভাষার পাঠকদের কাছে প্রকাশিত করার লক্ষ্যে বইটির অনুবাদ শুরু করেছিলেন।

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর তাঁর কাব্যগ্রন্থ-নাইবেদ্যা, উত্সর্গো, খেয়া এবং গীতাঞ্জলি সম্পর্কে বলেছেন- ‘আমি এই পৃথিবীর প্রেমে ভরে যাই। আমি মহান (মহাবিশ্বের স্রষ্টা) এর কাছে মাথা নিচু করেছি, আত্মনিয়োগের মাধ্যমে আমি তাঁর কাছে মুক্তি চেয়েছি। আমি বিশ্বাস করি যে তিনি পার্থিব মানব জাতির অন্তর্গত মহান ব্যক্তিদের অন্তরে রয়েছেন। আমি আমার সেরা সৃষ্টিকে নৈবেদ্য হিসাবে উত্সর্গ করার চেষ্টা করেছি, যা আমি শৈশবকাল থেকেই সাহিত্যিক অনুধাবনের প্রচেষ্টার দ্বারা অর্জন করেছি। যখনই আমি এই অফারের বিপরীতে বাহ্যিক প্রতিরোধের অভিজ্ঞতা পেয়েছি, তখন তাঁর অনুগ্রহে আমার হৃদয় অভিভূত হয়েছিল। ‘

রবীন্দ্রনাথ নিজেই গীতাঞ্জলির সমস্ত কবিতা ও গানের অনুবাদ করেননি। অন্যরা যারা এই কাজটি করেছিলেন তারা হলেন ব্রিটিশ কবি ও অনুবাদক ব্রাদার্স জেমস এবং জো উইন্টার। রবীন্দ্রনাথ তাঁর নিজের কবিতা অনুবাদ করার ক্ষেত্রে নির্দোষ ছিলেন কারণ তিনি সেগুলি আক্ষরিকভাবে অনুবাদ করেন নি। বরং তাঁর নিজের কবিতাগুলির ইংরেজি সংস্করণ থিম্যাটিক অনুবাদের চেয়ে বেশি ছিল। তিনি প্রায়শই পদার্থগুলিকে ব্যাহত না করে ধারণা এবং অন্তর্নিহিত অর্থ প্রকাশের জন্য কবিতাগুলিকে সংক্ষিপ্ত করেন। এই অনূদিত নৃবিজ্ঞানের বিশেষত পশ্চিমে বাংলা ভাষা নিয়ে সাহিত্যের আখড়া ছিল। ফলস্বরূপ, রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের কাব্য প্রতিভা বিশ্বব্যাপী স্বীকৃতি লাভ করেছিল।

নোবেল সাহিত্যের পুরষ্কারের জন্য সুইডিশ একাডেমির প্রশংসা করে বলা হয়েছে, ‘রবীন্দ্রনাথকে তাঁর গভীর অনুভূতিপূর্ণ ও সুন্দর কবিতার স্বীকৃতি হিসাবে নোবেল পুরষ্কার দেওয়া হচ্ছে কারণ তাঁর নিজস্ব কাব্যিক ধারণা এবং ধারণাগুলি পাশ্চাত্য সাহিত্যে তাঁর নিজস্ব দক্ষতার সাথে ইংরেজির দ্বারা অনুপ্রবেশ করা হয়েছে।

গীতাঞ্জলীতে ১০৩ টি কবিতা ও সুর রয়েছে, যার মধ্যে ১৫ ৩টি কবিতা ও গানের আসল বাংলা গীতাঞ্জলি থেকে মাত্র ৫৩ টি অনুবাদ করা হয়েছে। এর আগে প্রকাশিত রবীন্দ্রনাথের নয়টি ভিন্ন ভিন্ন গ্রন্থ থেকে বাকী ৫০ টি গীত ও কবিতা গীতঞ্জলির ইংরেজি সংস্করণের জন্য নির্বাচিত হয়েছিল; গীতিমাল্যা থেকে ১৬  টি গানে নেওয়া হয়েছে, নাইবেদ্যা থেকে ১৫ টি, খেয়ার ১১ টি কবিতা, শিশু থেকে ৩ টি এবং কল্পনা, চৈতালী, উত্সর্গো, স্বরণ এবং অচলায়তন (একটি নাটক) থেকে একটি করে কবিতা নেওয়া হয়েছে। গীতিমাল্য, রবীন্দ্রনাথ রচিত গানের সংকলনকে পরিপক্ক জীবনে সংগীতের পবিত্র মালা হিসাবে বিবেচনা করা হয়। এই সংকলনের কবি ঈশ্বরের প্রতি তাঁর সম্পূর্ণ উত্সর্গকে বিভিন্ন শব্দ ও আকারে প্রকাশ করেছিলেন। নায়েবেদ্যের অন্তর্ভুক্ত ‘চিত্ত জেঠা ভোই শুন্ন্য’ (যেখানে মন কোনও ভয়ের অধিকারী নয়) একটি কবিতা কবির বিস্তৃতি এবং মনের নির্ভীকতা এবং তাঁর জ্ঞান পরিচালিত যুক্তি প্রকাশ করে। অচলায়তন ‘আলো আমার আলো’ (আলোক, আমার আলো) এর গীতায় প্রকৃতির আশীর্বাদ জীবনের প্রতিটি পদক্ষেপে সূর্যের রশ্মির সাথে জাগ্রত হয়েছিল। কবি হৃদয় এবং বীণার স্ট্রোক (বাদ্যযন্ত্র) এর মাধ্যমে সমস্ত অন্ধকারের বিরুদ্ধে থিম প্রকাশ করেছিলেন  নাটকের প্রসঙ্গে, অচলায়তন, জ্ঞান অর্জনের অবস্থার সাথে সম্পর্কিত। এটি বলে যে একটি বদ্ধ পরিস্থিতিতে জমা হওয়া জ্ঞান প্রাণহীন এবং দরিদ্র। কিন্তু যখন বাধাগুলি সরিয়ে নেওয়া হয়, কিরণ এবং আনন্দ মনের মধ্যে প্রবেশ করে, তখন এই পর্যায়ে অর্জিত জ্ঞান নির্ভুল হয়ে যায়।
